Big news for Eastham’s salt marsh!
Boat Meadow Marsh — a large salt marsh that includes an abandoned cranberry farm — has long been shaped by a century of agricultural impacts like ditches and embankments. Now, Mass Audubon is moving forward with plans to restore this important coastal landscape and strengthen its resilience to sea level rise.
Thanks to a Salt Marsh Restoration & Monitoring grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, Mass Audubon received funding to assess baseline conditions and design a restoration plan with partners including the Town of Eastham, Eastham Conservation Trust, and The Nature Conservancy.
This project will help heal degraded marsh habitat, reconnect natural hydrology, and support coastal resilience — while showcasing how former cranberry farmland can be transformed for nature and community.
